Industry specific directories are generally going to help your SEO and lead generation more than general directories. We’ve tried to break these topical directories down into categories but please be aware that some of them were difficult to qualify so they might be in a different category to what you’d expect. • [Design Quality] – Our subjective assessment of the design quality of the directory. We are using design quality as a proxy for overall quality. Its far from a perfect measure but does give you an indication of whether it would be a good directory to add your business to or not (more on this below).
• [is the directory ‘followed’ or ‘no followed’] – Websites can add code to their outbound links to tell Google whether or not they ‘endorse’ the website being linked to. If the link has the ‘followed’ code they’re telling Google they do endorse it, which is better for the business, if the link has the ‘no followed’ code they’re telling Google they don’t necessarily endorse it, which isn’t as good for the business (more on this below).

  • Fully Free – The main business details: Name, Address, Phone Number & Website Link can all be added to a listing without any kind of fee or exchange (such as a reciprocal link)  required
  • Restricted Free – The listing and details can be added free of payment but with other restrictions (such as reciprocal link)
  • Once Off Cost – There is a one off cost to add the listing
  • Ongoing Cost – There is an ongoing cost to add and keep the listing alive
  • Requires Further Investigation – It wasn’t clear to us if there was a cost and/or what the cost was so further investigation is required to determine this

Directory Quality

You shouldn’t add your business to every directory you can find willy nilly because low quality directories will have little to no value. Use our ‘design quality’ assessment as a rough guide and make your own decision about the quality of the directory. Essentially you want to determine if they directory actually adds any value to the web. If your answer is ‘no’ or ‘barely’ its not worth trying to get your business in there.

Followed or No Followed

Typically when trying to acquire links for SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) purposes, you want them to be ‘followed.’ If they are ‘no followed’ then you should get some other kind of benefit, such as traffic and leads, to make it worth adding your business to that directory.

One type of value which is useful for Local SEO (Search Engine Optimisation for Local Businesses that have Google Place Pages, P.S. every local business qualifies for a Google Place page and you should claim yours if you haven’t already) is to get a Name, Address, Phone Number or NAP citation for your business. The more instances of your businesses NAP information that are available around the web, the better your Local SEO rankings will be. In this case, directories only need to feature your NAP information rather than your website link in order to give value.
